UL says major campus works should finish by 31 March 2027, with online classes planned meanwhile; the December graduation is unlikely to go ahead as scheduled.

The University of Liberia (UL) has announced a US$6.35 million renovation, modernization and beautification programme, with major projects due to be completed by 31 March 2027. UL President Dr. Layli Maparyan outlined the plan at a press conference at the Capitol Hill campus on Wednesday, 21 October, according to the Liberian Observer.

The money was allocated for 2026 through the National Legislature and the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, and Dr. Maparyan said more funding is expected. Work is under way on the Graduate School, the Business College and the Law School and its annex at Capitol Hill, and on the Academic Building at the A.M. Dogliotti medical campus in Congo Town. Repairs to roofs, bathrooms and lighting are being done on all four campuses.

The timeline affects students. FrontPage Africa reports that Dr. Maparyan said the December commencement is unlikely to go ahead as scheduled and that UL is considering issuing diplomas to eligible graduates before a later ceremony. No new date has been set. The New Dawn says no date has been announced for reopening or for the 106th graduation.

In the meantime, UL plans to rely heavily on online teaching alongside essential in-person classes, and is looking at off-campus teaching space. Lecturers will take a two-week online training workshop, and the university is working on affordable data packages and more computer access for students.

The New Dawn also reports that talks between the administration, the Board of Trustees and the faculty and staff association (ULFASA) are continuing. Issues include pension contributions, salary increments and arrears. ULFASA has submitted a draft memorandum of understanding that the administration is reviewing.
